THURSDAY 29 and
FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER
TWO-DAY OUTING TO
DORDRECHT
Dave Hawkins is the outing coordinator.
Dave and Delene went on the three-day outing to Dordrecht organised by the
Border Historical Society in April this year. In reporting back to
BHS, Dr Patrick Hutchinson, of Border Historical Society wrote: ‘that if one
ever has the chance to be shown around Dordrecht by Ben Maclennan,
grab it with both
hands.’
Dave has organised
a two-day tour for LAHS members for the end of October 2026.
Ben Maclennan,
journalist and author, is the curator of the Anderson Museum, Dordrecht.
The museum collections are housed in a grand old sandstone building,
a bequest of the
Anderson family.
Ben and the governing
board have done a magnificent job in preserving and presenting the cultural and
natural history of this once vibrant farming community.
Dordrecht was founded
in 1857 by the Rev. Andrew Murray.
THURSDAY, 29th to
Friday, 30th OCTOBER 2026
Members will be leaving home early, not later than 8am.
Travelling along R67 from Port Alfred via Bathurst to N2.
Travel over bridge and turn right onto N2.(East)
Travel approximately 8kms to turn off to KwaMaqoma (Fort
Beaufort).
Travel via Ecca Pass and Fort Brown to T-junction of R67 and R63.
Turn right onto R63.3kms at T-junction of R63 and R67, turn left onto R67.
10am stop at Baddaford Farm Stall for tea and comfort break.
From Baddaford turn right back onto R67.
Continue up R67 until roundabout R61.
Turn right to Komani (Queenstown)
Komani to Dordrecht via R392
71.5kms.
13h00 Picnic lunch in
Dordrecht.
Book into
accommodation. Lisa Greyling’s booked accommodation in town.
Visit Dordrecht Museum with Ben Maclennan.
Supper at Lisa Greyling’s
restaurant.
FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER
Friday morning, after
breakfast visit town of Dordrecht with guide Piet Greyling, a local businessman
and history enthusiast with many family anecdotes to tell
Post Office tiles,
Dutch Reformed Church, Hartley’s Hotel, and other points of interest.
Tea in Dordrecht
before leaving for home.
On road home stop to
see ruins of Munnik Castle on Botha’s Hoek farm. George Munnik became the first
Judge President of the Republic of the Transkei and later
Judge President of the
Western Cape.
Costs Accommodation-Lisa
Greyling in town.
Total cost: R750.00
pp sharing for dinner, bed and breakfast, museum entry
Total cost R1000 pp -single accommodation,
bed and breakfast, museum entry.
Bring own lunches and
teas.

Alfred to Dordrecht and same Dordrecht to Port Alfred.
